Dr. Jamila Smith Young, DNP, MPH, CPNP-AC

President

Dr. Jamila Smith-Young is a certified nurse practitioner focusing on pediatric acute care. Her expertise in this area is demonstrated by her current role as a Pediatric Endocrinology Nurse Practitioner at UT Le Bonheur Pediatric Specialists, where she concentrates on diabetes and other endocrine disorders. With over 14 years of experience in the healthcare field, Dr. Smith-Young, a native of Memphis, focuses on endocrinology and pulmonology.

Dr. Smith-Young’s influence extends beyond her clinical practice. She is a key figure in shaping the future of nursing as an Assistant Professor and mentor at the College of Nursing at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). Her role as a co-investigator on several clinical research projects related to pediatric diabetes and hypothyroidism and her involvement in an HRSA grant that addresses social determinants of health and health equity further demonstrates her dedication to the field. Dr. Smith-Young is also a published author and has presented her research at national conferences on diabetes and pulmonology.

Dr. Smith-Young’s academic journey is a testament to her dedication to nursing. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a degree in Nursing from the Baptist College of Health Sciences. To further her nursing career, she obtained a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and a Master of Public Health from Walden University. Dr. Smith-Young later completed her doctoral degree in Nursing Practice at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

Dr. Smith-Young’s commitment to her community is evident in her founding of Forward 901, a 501(c)(4) organization. Her mission is to enhance Memphis’s overall quality of life by supporting programs, activities, and events for youth and disadvantaged populations. Her partnership with Memphis Mayor Paul Young further amplifies their impact. Together, they are a dynamic force in the community, inspiring others with their dedication. They have two children, Zoe and Paxton.
